After a semi-uncomfortable private breakfast with Oliver, the rest of the morning was a mess of appointments and people. I met my four bridesmaids at the salon where we began primping, starting with manis and pedis. We drank mimosa—well, they drank mimosa’s—Marley and I drank orange juice. I called ahead of time to inform the salon manager of my situation, and she assured me they would be discreet about my drinks. After our nails, we had our hair styled. Then we headed to the church, where a talented makeup artist made us look like living photoshop filters.

Jeanine helped me into my lace fitted bridal gown while my bridesmaids slipped into their wispy lavender chiffon dresses. They all had slightly different tops that I’d meticulously coordinated to flatter everyone’s body shapes. Oliver’s niece was the flower girl and also the only child invited to the wedding.

All my planning had paid off. The decorations, flowers, dresses, and tuxes were perfect, but none of it mattered if the groom got cold feet. At least it would be a tastefully beautiful disaster, instead of a tacky one.

The day was filled with so many fake smiles and hurried trips to the bathroom. I didn’t know if it was nerves or the baby, but the nausea had me excusing myself constantly. I tried to vomit as quietly as possible, and I had a travel-sized mouthwash stuffed into the hidden pocket in my gown. My mouthwash was almost gone before the pictures even began.

Travis knocked as he entered the room where the bridesmaids and I were getting ready. “Incoming ladies,” he warned, but we were all dressed. “I need to steal the bride for a moment.” He spoke with enough authority that no one second-guessed it. I followed him into the hall where he assured me everything was fine. He led me into a private room just a little way down the hall. He locked us in, and when he spun to face me, he said, “Breathe.”

I hadn’t realized I was holding my breath. I dropped the fake smile, and my shoulders sagged.

He stared, taking me in. “I thought you might need a break. How’re you holding up?”

“Not amazing,” I said with a shrug. “I just keep imagining him bailing on me at the altar.”

He pulled me into a hug, being extra careful with my hair and dress. “He loves you. He wouldn’t do that to you.” He kissed the top of my head and released me.

“Thanks, Travis.”

“How’s the nausea?”

“It’s under control now.”

“Good. I need to get back to my best man duties, but I had to come check on you.” He stepped toward the door.

I wanted to steal him from his best man duties and make him the equivalent of my maid of honor. What would that be? Bridesman or maybe a friend of honor. It didn’t matter. He wasn’t mine to claim. I realized he was staring at me with a brow raised, hesitating to leave. I gave him a fake smile, and he unlocked the door.
